The Bugle - Browning, Montana

The Bugle - I think that's the expression for when Elk are doing their mating call. This metallic Elk stands outside the Indian Health Service Hospital in Browning, Montana. I park near him every time I drive in for a night shift in the emergency department. This particular afternoon the ceilings were descending - and it looked like more snow was in the offing. Tiger Swallowtail

Tiger Swallowtail – While wandering around a state park near Medina, Ohio 19 August 2006 – I spied this specimen. On a lark, I put an extension tube on the camera and a telephoto lens. Leica IIIc

Leica IIIc with a 50mm F:2.0 Summitar lens - the quintessential "Barnack Leica." It has shutter speeds 1-second to 1/1000th sec. Rangefinder is seperate from the viewfinder, which can slow things down a bit while shooting - but it is bright and easy to use. There is no accommodation for using flash – which suits me just fine. I have yet to do any serious shooting with this old bird – but I recently had it overhauled – so it is ready for the call. I had one back in the late 1960’s and just wanted another for my working collection.

Douglas A2D Skyshark – photographed at Pacific Fighters, Idaho Falls, Idaho on 01 August 2006. Only twelve of these beasts were ever made. Imagine a Douglas Skyraider on steroids . . . This is (SFAIK) the sole surviving example and is not airworthy. When I asked if they think they’ll ever get this into the air, the folks at Pacific Fighters just laughed good-naturedly. “Far too complex a machine. . .” Nikon FE2 w/Sigma 35-70mm zoom lens and 400 ASA Fuji color negative film.

Bookends

Bookends - January 2009. Driving down a ranch road west of Browning, MT I caught sight of a few horses betwen the mounds of plowed snow. Stopped and climbed up on a mound. Shot four images in rapid succession and stitched them together after the fact. The sky still has some stitching artifact - so this image is heavily cropped. After the Fall - Clifton Gorge, Ohio

After the Fall - Clifton Gorge Ohio - November 2008. This year I missed my pilgramages to Hocking Hills and Glen Helen Nature Preserve in Southwest Ohio. I missed the spectacular leaves on the trees.
